Causes
The most common cause that brings dimples on one’s face is the shortened muscle. Generally, muscles always rest at shortened state which is why dimples are not always apparent. However, when the muscles are stretched like smile, the dimples form automatically. When the age crosses, the person experiences the face muscles pull at skin, bringing classic dimple on the skin. In fact, most commonly the face muscles slowly stretch out that brings dimples at young age and with time when age passes the dimples fade away. Well, face is not the only area where dimples are found though it is a common site. Besides, dimples are also formed on other body parts like buttocks. Still, dimples on other parts of the body are not that appraised like on face, perhaps because face is the readily visible area where anyone can find the dimples whereas; other body parts remain covered.
Genetics
Dimples only require one gene to bring the depth on your face and so they are called as dominant trait. If one of your parents has dimples then you are most likely to get the same dimples on your face. The chances of getting dimples on child’s face are around 25 to 50 percent where the gene is passed. In fact, if both of your parents have dimples then the chances of receiving dimpled face of their child increases by 50 to 100 percent. So, it is a matter of gene that brings dimpled face.
Certainly, dimples appear on cheeks, but they are not restricted only to cheeks, rather they can also be found on chin though not visible until the person smiles. The changes of expression or stretched face (smile) bring the clear visibility of dimples. Despite all these facts, many people possess dimple on one side of the cheek which usually is the cause of multiple generations of a family. Still, it is an unusual gene which can be passed from the family.
Mostly dimples represent youth as with time they fade from face. So, many consider dimpled face as baby faced or youthful.
