Popularity is not the only measure of an SUV, car or truck. However, looking at the most popular SUVs and other vehicles isn’t a bad place to start. After all, there are reasons they are the most popular.
Everyone talks about trucks with Chevrolet Silverado (585,582), Ford F-Series (909,330), and Ram Pickup (536,980) the top three selling vehicles in America.
But Americans buy nearly thrice as many SUV/crossovers as pickup trucks. According to the data from GoodCarBadCar website, last year, four of the 10 best-selling vehicles were sports utility/crossovers, the Nissan Rogue/Rogue Sport (412,110), the Toyota RAV4 (427,168 in sales), Honda CR-V (379,021) and the Chevrolet Equinox (332,621). But carmakers offered about 120 different models of SUV/crossovers compared to 13 truck models.
Even cars outsell trucks with more than 135 models generating nearly double the number of trucks, despite only three cars – the Toyota Camry (343,439), Honda Civic (325,760) and Toyota Corolla (303,732) – ranking in the top 10 of all vehicles sold last year.
The Dodge Grand Caravan was the best-selling minivan in 2018, but ranked just 29th among all vehicles.
